• Good Moon Deer Releases Debut LP "Dot" On Vinyl

    Limited edition includes screen-printed artwork
"Dot" available as free MP3 download at

"Music which seethes and writhes with a rare sense of creativity" - Clash

"Dot" is the debut album of Good Moon Deer, an experimental producer from Iceland. Originally released in 2015 as a free download on the artist's website, now it's being released in a very limited vinyl edition.

The project is the brainchild of one Guðmundur Úlfarsson (the name is one of many mispronunciations of Guðmundur's forename), a Reykjavík-based graphic designer and artist born and raised in a small fishing village on the east coast of Iceland. He applies a strong DIY ethos to all aspects of Good Moon Deer, from the artwork to his onstage visuals to silkscreening and hand-labelling each vinyl record.

Good Moon Deer has been a staple of Iceland Airwaves Music Festival for several years, also playing Sónar Reykjavík with an elaborate stage troupe, and touring the UK with M-Band. He has picked up attention and plaudits from The Quietus, Clash Magazine, The 405 and Dots & Dashes, amongst many others.

Being relatively new to music, this first album marks "the end of an era," for the project—hence the name, "Dot." Through phases of experimentation, Guðmundur decided that it was time to capture his jagged, often improvised electronica as a recording, culminating in this fascinating debut LP.

"A 44 minute trip through electronic music that sits somewhere between Prefuse 73 and Pantha Du Prince." - The 405
"Rather than breaking new ground, Good Moon Deer re-claim patches of disused land and
converts them into something more than the sum of its parts." - The Quietus
"An artistic performer driven by heavy, experimental electronic beats" -
"A work of off-the-wall, oddball brilliance." - Dots & Dashes

Independently run French music festival La Route Du Rock has announced the first part of its 2016 lineup. As always, the festival brings together shoegaze, dream/indie/chamber-pop, experimental rock and electronic music acts for a rich and exciting bill. The 2016 lineup will see performances from veterans Belle & Sebastian, Tindersticks, Battlesand Lush, who are joined by Julia Holter, Sleaford Mods, La Femme, Suuns and Rival Consoles

But La Route Du Rock is perhaps best known for keen-eyed, timely bookings of underexposed and emerging artists. This year, the festival showcases Kevin Morby, a member of Woods and The Babies, who released his third album "Singing Saw" this month, and the "dark euphoria" of Matador signing Hælos, who just released their debut LP "Full Circle." Also playing are Minor Victories, a new band featuring key members of Mogwai, Editors and Slowdive, all of whom have performed at the festival previously.

There are many more bands still be announced. Very limited travel, accommodation & VIP wristband seats are available for members of the press to review the festival, and for reviewers wishing to travel independently and camp on-site, VIP wristbands are available. Contact me with expressions of interest and a link to the accreditation form.

The festival's main site is a spectacular ruined fort in St. Malo, France—a walled city located on Brittany's "emerald coast," so-called because of the brightly coloured sea. It's a historical area of France that's a popular tourist destination in it's own right, from the world-famous oyster farm at Cancale to the castle island Mont Saint-Michel, both of which are just a few kilometres from the festival site. By day, festival goers sun themselves, swim and take in local French bands and DJs on the beach stage, before moving to the fort for the evening programme.

Finally, the festival is a bargain, by inflated UK ticket-price standards. La Route Du Rock tickets, including return ferry rides, ground travel and camping, are on sale here for £155. Other ticket packages and day tickets are available here.

  • Björk Announced for La Route Du Rock 2015

La Route Du Rock, the annual music festival in St. Malo, France, has announced the Icelandic musical polymath Björk as the first headliner of the its 25th anniversary edition.

The event is much-loved by French and English festival-goers alike, offering lovingly-curated lineups in which no two bands overlap, and every act gets a headliner-length set. The festival takes place on beach and castle stages in and around the picturesque seaside town of St. Malo. A true jewel of Brittany's "emerald coast", the walled city, sea-swimming and nearby oyster farms are a year-round attraction in their own right.

Previous years have seen top international bands like The National, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Portishead, Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, The Cure and many more headline the Fort de Saint-Père stage, which it houses within a huge 17th Centurt fort. But the festival is also famous for spotting new bands early - it's a fantastic place to find fresh talents. Deerhunter, Mac Demarco, Ought, Perfect Pussy, Parquet Courts, Fuck Buttons, Jaaco Gardner, Lower Dens, Alt-J, and countless others had shows at La Route Du Rock early on in their career.

The festival's adventurous programming, combined with top-notch hospitality and excellent staging, makes it a firm favourite amongst artists as well as fans. La Route Du Rock is one of the "best kept secrets" of the European festival circuit, and 2015 is shaping up to be another vintage year.

More lineup announcements coming soon - combined festival and ferry tickets are on sale now for only £155.

  • M-Band: "a truly captivating world"

“A diverse collection of eight tracks which spans influences such as skippy 2-step, avant techno and glorious mechanical soul… rippling, billowing techno with a humane heart, and the visuals match the hypnotic, hallucinogenic music.” - Clash Magazine

"Like Wild Beasts’ Hayden Thorpe swooning over a Planet Mu skitter, the record darts between stout kick drums, glitchy shuffles, murky trip-hop and widescreen ambience, at once balmy and chilling, generous and vulnerable." - Crack Magazine

"The slowly unfurling techno-with-soul is reminiscent of the kind of illuminating noise that Caribou puts out. "All Is Love" wields a strong, meaty pulse that you can shake your thang to, but it's also got a warm emotional core." - The Line of Best Fit

"The "M-Band" modus operandi is ethereal and beautiful, but also jarring and unexpected... more like the feeling of the unheimlich than epiphany, more uncanny than numinous." - The Quietus

"[M-Band] glows with sincere illustrations of wistful desire - intense, conscious, and full of nurture... willing to take a listener in with open arms and float to a warm haven." - no fear of pop

"A striking, absorbing, rich and wonderfully dense creation which mirrors the the night in all of its beguiling beauty. The rush and hush, the burning heart of it all... a truly captivating world" - Gold Flake Paint

"A cardinal masterpiece of contemporary music... an audio Sistine Chapel." - Joyzine

"The coordinates of the musical universe of Hörður Már Bjarnason are faith, hope and love... eight tracks in which he dances playfully through space and time, interweaving his almost weightless tenor vocals with bass gravity." - Spex

"A hypnotic sound, gleaned from various corners of contemporary electronica, with songs built from minimal clicking rhythms, washes and whispers of ambient sound, haunting melodies, swells and crescendos" - Ja Ja Ja Music

"An artist who strives to maintain human elements alongside his intricately woven electronic backdrops... Bjarnason’s distinctive vocals lend a tender edge to his work." - Nordic Playlist

Astoundingly talented Icelandic producer and vocalist M-Band has proven a hit with early-adopting European music publications following the release of his debut album, "Haust".

Picked as one of 19 Icelandic bands - from a long list of hundreds - M-Band will represent Iceland at the 2015 Eurosonic festival.

  • Projekta Receive 1m ISK Grant From Iceland Music Export

Projekta Music has received a 1m ISK (€6,515) grant from the Iceland Music Export to promote three highly promising artists from the Reykjavík scene: Just Another Snake Cult, M-Band and Tilbury.

Partnering with Berlin-based management and publicity house Nordic By Nature for the German aspect, Projekta will guide albums by the three bands to a late-2014 release in the UK and GSA territories, also carrying out a publicity campaign, and working in a consulting manager role, establishing relationships with showcase festivals, labels, agents and publishers.

These three bands have caught the wind in their sails recently due to their creative, exciting and accomplished sounds, both in the studio and onstage. Projekta has been in ongoing conversation with all three for several months, finally applying for the grant to work on their behalf.

Taken together, they give a strong representation of Reykjavík's diverse and thriving scene. Tilbury’s intelligent and purposeful indie-pop, M-Band’s on-point nu-electronica, and Just Another Snake Cult’s imaginative psych-surf sound are rich with potential for overseas development.

We’ve put together a playlist of tracks by the three bands here for people to listen or blog, and we look forward to bringing their talents to the ears of critics and audiences alike over the coming months.

  • Slottsfjell 2014: "A three-day festival that has bordered on fantasy"

"A three-day festival that has bordered on fantasy... a heavenly sanctuary." - Drowned In Sound

"Stunning... a festival that completely delivers on its promise" - CLASH

"It's like Glastonbury Tor's tougher brother and the views are breathtaking... I wake up covered in footprints with no clear idea of what went down, apart from me. On the bus to the airport the next day, I start to well up, like a child at the end of a birthday party. I'm going to miss the beautiful scenery, the unfailingly friendly Norwegians and their enthusiastic, deranged bands. We board the plane, already pining for the fjords." - The Quietus

"The added bonus with an event like Slottsfjell, aside from the great line-up and wonderful people, is that it will truly double up as a holiday. Why not swap dancing in mud with morning swims in the fjord? Norway and Slottsfjell will change your life!" - Amazing Radio

  • ATP Iceland Announces Slowdive, Shellac, Low, Liars, Mogwai, Loop & More

Mogwai, Slowdive, Shellac, Low, Devendra Banhart (solo),
Liars, Loop, I Break Horses, Pharmakon and Ben Frost to play alongside Portishead, Interpol, Swans, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Forest Swords & Fuck Buttons.

HAM, Sin Fang, Pascal Pinon and Fufanu join Samaris, Sóley, Low Roar, Mammút & more to complete Icelandic lineup

All Tomorrow’s Parties today announces the lineup for their 2014 Icelandic Takeover, which includes a Neil Young & Crazy Horse show at Laugardalshöllin on July 7th, and the second ever ATP Iceland Festival, to be held at the former NATO base Ásbrú in Keflavík near the nation’s capital, from July 10-12th.

First up are Steve Albini’s brutal alt-rock outfit Shellac, playing Iceland for the first time since 1999. They're joined on the bill by US slowcore legends Low. LIARS’ latest record sets them up for incendiary set at ATP Iceland, and the dreamy sound of Slowdive will be a big draw for many. Alt-folk star Devendra Banhart will also enter the spotlight for a solo outing, and seminal Scottish post-rock outfit Mogwai will bring their evergreen epic noise to the festival.

On the home team are Ben Frost, the Iceland-based Australian whose acclaimed new album A U R O R A is due to drop soon. Young Icelandic twins Pascal Pinon join the bill alongside their Morr Music labelmate Sin Fang, as do classic Icelandic rock band HAM, and Fufanu (formerly Captain Fufanu).

These bands join an already stellar lineup, with Portishead, Interpol, Swans, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Fuck Buttons, Eaux, Forest Swords, Samaris, Low Roar, For A Minor Reflection, Sóley and Mammút already announced.

ATP founder Barry Hogan: "We are over the moon to announce some of our favourite bands playing Iceland for the very first time. It's only our second year, but we've everyone from ATP royalty like Mogwai and Shellac to bands who've heavily influenced us like Loop and Low. We love Iceland and we can’t wait to get back once again to share this stellar lineup and unique setting with you."

On Portishead & Interpol: "Portishead have a rich history and close relationship with us, which started with them curating ATP back in 2007 after a long live-hiatus and being the first ever curators for the I'll Be Your Mirror series. Interpol on the other hand, while being long-time ATP favourites, have never played the event, and it's an exciting prospect that the eagerly awaited second Icelandic ATP will be their first."

With the lineup of music now complete, there are still some exciting announcements to come, including the curator/s of the ever-popular cinema schedule, and the details of the food & drink element of the festival that brings so much happiness to attendees each year as they devour some Icelandic food between bands.

Festival tickets that include on-site accommodation quickly sold out, so the festival has secured extra accommodation on-site at Ásbrú to reflect the demand. Located only a short walk from the venues, these tickets are available as 2-berth and 4-berth on Combination tickets with access to the Neil Young & Crazy Horse show are also available.
